Our team was selected by JPL to provide Schematic Design services for a new 130,000 square-foot, six-story $80,000,000 Mission Operations Center. Occupying a strategic corner location, the new facility is sited through a comprehensive campus master plan. The current and future building placement allows a new performative landscape which conducts people and water through the steep terrain of the JPL campus. The new associated plazas and landscapes further enhance the ecological character and human habitation of the site through chaparral plantings, woodland groves, and outdoor meeting decks.
The proposed building animates the site with the movement of the sun and the creation of shadow, while movement of people through exposed stairs further activates the façades. As the sun goes down, the emergence of light from within the building will communicate its active function. While in this early stage, the design has pursued some elemental strategies to assist in achieving a LEED Silver rating through the careful siting, sun control, and energy production strategies.
