When Macy's closed their landmark downtown Spokane store in March of 2016, the community was genuinely concerned about the future of the 370,000-square-foot building and the gap it could leave in downtown's vitality. Fortunately, Centennial Properties purchased the 1914 building with the vision of capitalizing on trends that favor downtown living and specialty retail. NAC's design preserves the historic east side of the building, while incorporating a more contemporary response to the immediate surroundings on the non-historic facades. The first two floors will be retail, with 105 apartments on floors three through nine that will feature set-back balconies. With the community enthusiastically observing and the downtown economy poised to benefit, the effort is moving at a blistering pace. Retail space will be occupied in November 2017, with residential opening in spring and summer of 2018.
