Named after the iconic local peak in this small Pacific Northwest town, Mount Si High School is defined by the mountain and a ridge along the east and south, and the Snoqualmie River on the north. The school lies within the river’s floodway, requiring an elevated building in order to locate occupied space above the flood elevation. Formed by a series of volumes mitigating the imposing scales of the adjacent landscape, the 350,000 square-foot replacement school is organized into small learning communities for a total capacity of 2,300 students. Interior and exterior spaces are designed to accommodate small and large group gathering, independent and group study, and informal social interactions.
