North Central High School Commons Addition
Spokane Public Schools
Spokane, Washington
The second of three phases, the Commons Addition is a complex project that builds new program space over an existing gymnasium and unifies internal circulation and building architecture with this critical north/south infill mass. The project connects six different disjointed areas: two sports entries on Level 1, two connecting corridors on Level 2, and two bridge corridors on Level 3. Following the success of the Phase 1 Institute of Science and Technology addition, the Phase 2 provides a crucial social hub for sporting events, all-school gatherings, and amenities for the greater North Central community. A truly urban school, this four-story brick and glass building now affords students cutting edge facilities flooded in natural daylight—a stark contrast to the original 1983 building characterized as a "brick bunker."
