The design of the Horizon Middle School modernization and addition is inspired by the contemporary forms and materials in the existing building. Strategic additions allow for the compact footprint to be opened up, adding more natural light into the core spaces and increasing the capacity to serve 600 students. This comprehensive modernization stripped the building down to essentially the structural core and existing exterior envelope, allowing for the building to be reorganized and outfitted with the infrastructure and layout to support 21st-century education. The project used a GC/CM project delivery method, employing Lean tools, specifically Target Value Design (TVD). TVD provides real-time pricing by the contractor partner, enabling the team (Owner, Contractor, Design Team) to make quick, comprehensive decisions to streamline the design process and eliminate wasted time and effort. The 90,000 SF renovation and addition is scheduled to be complete in the Fall of 2020.
