The Shelton High School Expansion features a 41,850 SF three-story integrated administration and academic building. The expansion develops student-centered spaces that support next-generation informal learning, including multi-use classrooms, small group and individual activity spaces, and project-based education. The project also includes a new auxiliary gymnasium building and renovation of athletic spaces.
The school wanted the new buildings to express modern, interactive education while fitting in as part of an integrated campus. The design team used a brick blend that was complimentary to the original masonry and wood tones. The materials add warmth and texture, fitting in nicely with the site’s evergreen trees. The interior is designed with inclusivity in mind by creating a variety of spaces that can adapt for different needs of students and integrating technology for evolving educational options. Common space benefits from excellent natural light through large windows and wood paneling on walls and ceilings adds warmth and provides an open, relaxed, comfortable feeling throughout the student-centered spaces. Thoughtful treatment of acoustics also allows these spaces to function well for focused work and social interactions. Effective wayfinding, simple organization, and an open layout are other key interior design components. The new modern facility is also fully equipped to support social and emotional development, physical well-being, and fitness. A weight room, auxiliary gym, and courtyard garden allow students to de-stress and regroup in a variety of ways.
The addition is sustainable and highly energy efficient.
Stay tuned! A new phase of this project is currently on the drawing boards. The project includes replacing the school's existing grass athletic fields with turf and remodeling weight, wrestling, and locker rooms.
